I REMEMBER Old Market being bombed during the Blitz. It was a dreadful time. I worked in Lewins Mead; it was a tailor's room on top of Rope Place.
We used to do alterations for all the gents' outfitters - Burtons, Dunns, Peter Richard, Fifty Shilling Tailors, Foster Bros, Russell etc. So you can imagine the shock when all the town was destroyed - Horsefair, Broadmead, Union Street, Wine Street, Corn Street, High Street, Old Market, Castle Street, where all the gents outfitters were - so that weekend destroyed our jobs.See the full content of this document
