On Track ; This Line Must Be Kept for Future Rail Investment

Summary

ONE of rail freight's most striking benefits is its environmental credentials. Freight carried by rail creates approximately 76 per cent less CO2 than that taken by road. If all the freight carried on road transferred to rail, 1.9 million tonnes less CO2 would be produced in Britain each year. Rail freight reduces the number of lorries, meaning fewer accidents, less pollution and clearer roads for communities across the country. A single freight train takes 40- 70 lorries off the roads.

Since the 1990s, rail freight has been on an upward trajectory - a trend that looks likely to continue. Rail freight volumes have increased by more than 50 per cent since 1995.
