The 24-week upper time limit for having an abortion could be cut tonight with the first serious challenge to the law in the Commons for 18 years. MPs of all parties have been given a free vote on the 'matter of conscience' as the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill is debated. Woodspring MP Liam Fox says Britain's laws are far too liberal but Health Minister Dawn Primarolo, Bristol South MP, is urging MPs to keep the current time limit. Here they state their case.

I Quite understand that the issue of abortion is an emotive one, where people hold strong and personal views. That is why such issues are always decided in the House of Commons on a free vote - not split along party political lines.
