Summary
IHAVE been following the library debate in your pages with great interest and am surprised that Ms Kate Davenport should imagine that library use is down, and wonder where she gets her information from.
Twice last summer I went into the great reading room in the College Green Reference library and could not find a seat because it was full of young people studying. I think that she and many librarians are entrenched in the past and all they think about is how many Mills and Boons are issued each year. A few years ago I asked in the library if they were going to buy a non fiction book, and was told that priority had to be given to fiction because the head librarian wanted to boost the issue figures. What the ordinary public cannot easily get hold of is new solid non-fiction material. Perhaps if more of this was bought and less wasted on "best sellers" then her statistics might rise.See the full content of this document
