1679 Captain Woodes Rogers born in Poole. 1680-1730 Golden Age of Piracy 1680 Sixty-eight Buccaneers, led by three pirate captains, raid eight Spanish ships off Panama and capture two warships. 1680- 2 The Buccaneers use a captured Spanish ship, the Trinidad, to plunder South and Central America.

1691 William Dampier, the navigator who later joins the Woodes Rogers expedition, returns to England after 12 years roaming the world's oceans as an explorer and buccaneer. 1696 The Woodes Rogers family move from Poole to Bristol. 1697 Forty-year-old Dampier publishes his first book A New Voyage around the World which makes his reputation as an adventurer and travel writer. 1701 Captain Kidd hanged at London's Execution Dock 1702 England declares war on France. Spain allies with France.
