Summary


ON Monday, March 22, three of the Bristol East prospective parliamentary candidates; Kerry McCarthy (Labour), Mike Popham (Liberal Democrats) and Glen Vowles (Green), joined the AS politics groups for a session on current events, personal views, and the upcoming election.

One of the most interesting questions posed was whether each candidate thought the voting age should be lowered to 16. All candidates agreed that they thought this was a sensible idea for various reasons: if we can pay taxes we should be able to vote, or that as we are greatly affected by funding we should be able to have a say in where it is spent. Vigorous debate ensued when Glen Vowles stated Mike Popham had previously completed a DemRef2010 survey stating that he (Popham) felt the voting age should remain at 18.
