; Southmead Redevelopment

Summary

THE new Southmead Hospital project has been praised alongside other high profile building projects nationally for the work it is doing in training young construction workers. The Pounds 430 million redevelopment project has been granted National Skills Academy for Construction status. It is the first project to be granted the title in the Bristol area, helping to train local people while giving them the chance to work on a major building project.

Developers of the new Southmead Hospital, Carillion, already invest in apprentices with their training centre in St Philip's where young people will have the chance to learn basic skills such as brick-laying, carpentry or dry-lining before they move onto placements around the city. And it is hoped the National Skills Academy status will help them in attracting apprentices to the major construction project.
