Summary

? IN response to Councillor Ian Boulton's letter in which he bemoans the failure of the Tory and Lib Dem councillors to fight against the selling off of Filton airfield, I have this to say. Where were the Labour councillors on the Save Frenchay Hospital debacle? I can tell you. They were acquiescent, except when shouting Save Frenchay supporters down, which is why we will have an entire shire county without any acute beds within the boundary of South Gloucestershire and why we will have 800 acute beds where once we had 1400. Chris Skidmore, MP, has a copy of an email sent by Lord Warner to the then Secretary of State, Patricia Hewitt, advising her that 50,000 petitioners was a significant measure of public opinion and should that we should be heeded. She ignored him and us. To Sid Anning I will say this. I am certain that the matter of the future of the Filton land was decided years ago as was the fate of Frenchay Hospital. These matters are decided, not by councilors in my opinion, but by powerful and influential but invisible people behind the scenes. They are accountable to no one but they skew matters with a 'word in the ear' and screw any chance of a democratic input from ratepayers.

Barbara Harris Save Frenchay Hospital Group ? I CAN'T say I found it surprising that Nick Clegg has emerged from his bunker to attack the Conservative promise of financial support for the institution of marriage.
