IFIRST heard about the UK riots via a voicemail message from my father, who at the time was in Croydon and very close to the destruction and violence.

I could not have been further removed from them as I was camping in Cornwall amid a fluctuating community of people of all ages, many of them teenagers who shared common values of trust, courtesy and respect.
