IN another example of HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) stepping up their fight against tax evasion and non compliance, HMRC has announced that it is setting up new task forces. The specialist teams will tackle high-risk trade sectors across the UK, beginning with the restaurant trade in London, with the South West a likely focus thereafter. The move is one of a series of recent moves by HMRC to combat tax evasion and non-compliance and they have suggested that there could be as much as a five-fold increase in criminal prosecutions following their increased efforts.

The medical profession and offshore bank accounts have been the focus of previous disclosure campaigns, as has the plumbing and heating industry more recently. HMRC is keen to stress that only those who deliberately break the rules or evade tax will be targeted. Honest businesses have absolutely nothing to worry about. But the message is clear - HMRC is actively pursuing those it believes are not paying the right amount of tax. HMRC has considerable experience of looking at the restaurant sector. It has traditionally looked closely at tips and employee status (are they employed or self-employed?). We have also seen investigations looking at takings and purchases. The restaurant trade opens itself to lots of business economics exercises.
