DEAN Gerken's man-of-the-match display at Newcastle has turned up the pressure on fellow Bristol City goalkeeper Adriano Basso.

Selected to play against the Coca-Cola Championship leaders on Saturday, Basso was forced to pull out shortly before kick-off after injuring himself during the warm-up at St James' Park. And Gerken, recalled to the substitutes' bench following a long illness, made the most of his opportunity, pulling off a series of spectacular saves as City held out for a goalless draw and a valuable point which keeps them within touching distance of the play-off positions. That could result in Basso being left out in the cold if he refuses to sign the new contract which has been on the table since February. Out of contract at the end of this season, the 34-year-old Brazilian was placed on the transfer list at his own request just days before the start of the campaign.
