It's been five years since former Strangelove frontman Patrick Duff's debut solo album Luxury Problems, but they've clearly not been wasted.

The Mad Straight Road is far and away the most accomplished music he has created in a career spanning 20-odd years (and some of them were, by his own admission, most odd); there are beautiful outlaw hymns here, coal-black fugitive pieces, pretty Disneyesque ditties ... songs with history and depth and spit and vinegar, masterfully produced by Phantom Limb's Stew Jackson.
