Rolling Into Town with a Happy Band of Musicians ; Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings | Colston Hall

Summary

IT'S difficult to imagine that The Rhythm Kings have now been together for 14 years. The band, led but not dominated by the ever impassive Bill Wyman, is playing better than ever and exudes a feeling of genuine pleasure in their playing. On this occasion they made the inspired choice of Mary Wilson as their guest. She is as glamorous as ever and the voice is still strong and fresh. After a genial introduction to the show Bill stood back and let the other eight members of the band have their moments. Beverley Skeete was in particularly fine voice with songs by Etta James, Jackie Wilson's I'll be Satisfied and an impassioned It's a Man's World; later backing Mary Wilson for some Supremes hits including Baby Love and Stop in the Name of Love. The band's impressive repertoire ranged from Jelly Roll boogie, via Gene Vincent to Chuck Berry's You Never Can Tell. Bill led the vocals on I Just Wanna Make Love to You and the Stones' Honky Tonk Women. Despite what he claims Bill obviously still has a soft spot for the occasional bit of Jagger and Richards.

Albert Lee provided a guitar virtuoso on GeneVincent's Race for the Devil while Georgie Fame on organ playing Ray Charles and the diminutive Geraint Watkins on piano taking on Willie Dixon's 300 lbs of Muscle and Joy' added variety to the mix.
