WHEN I was 15, in 1953, I went to work for Ferris & Co, Manufacturing Chemist, situated in Leek Lane, just off of Milk Street, near York Street.

Next door was a little shop by the name of F Onion, French Polisher, and in another lane, opposite, was a large red-brick building that was a technical college.
