Damage Is Equal to the Momentum

Summary

If T M Capron were to think intelligently about which vehicles are most likely to kill on the roads, he would come to the same conclusion that I have ("Car owners should think of others", Open Lines, July 26).

Using crash investigators' own calculations, the damage a moving vehicle can do is proportional to its momentum, which is equal to mass times speed. This means it's impossible for any one-ton sports car to be as dangerous as a relatively small 10-ton truck doing 30mph, because there are no cars that can do 300mph.
