IREAD C Stephens' letter about a national day for England with interest. He asks "does it really matter if it is St George or St Edmund?" In favour of St Edmund (our first patron saint) is the fact that he was an English king martyred by Danish Vikings for his Christian virtues, shot through with arrows, which is why his symbol is a crown crossed with arrows and a quiver. For St Edmund's Day, rather than St George's Day, to be the public holiday has logic on its side.

Spring has its fair share of public holidays.
