Summary

A BRISTOL schoolboy broke his neck diving into a swimming pool while on holiday with friends in Spain. Football-mad Craig Nurse, 17, who attends Saint Brendan's Sixth For m College in Brislington, suffered the injury at a private villa with six friends in Murcia, southern Spain. It is understood Jack Withey and Louis Ross, two teammates from Mangotsfield United, dived in to carefully rescue Craig, of Eastville, who had knocked himself unconscious. Craig's mother Diane, father David and brother Alan, 18, have flown out to be at the teenager's bedside. It is understood his friends have also taken it in turns to spend the night at his bedside.

Craig, who plays as a centre forward for Mangotsfield United's youth team, is waiting for a spinal operation at the Arrixaca General Hospital. It was hoped that he would be operated on last Tuesday but swelling around his injury may prevent surgery taking place until next week. Craig's grandmother Margaret Watts, 77, said he was initially unable to move any of his limbs but that in the last 48 hours had regained limited movement. She said doctors have said the injury is serious but are hopeful of him making a slow but full recovery. Mrs Watts, of Fishponds, told the Evening Post: "He broke his neck diving into the swimming pool on Thursday morning.
