By the late 1940s it was becoming obvious that Bristol's airport, located at Whitchurch since 1930, was no longer suitable for civilian use.

So in 1956, Bristol's Airport Committee decided to buy Lulsgate Bottom, a disused airfield which had been used as a Fighter Command base during the war years.
