Britain has an ageing population. In 1951 fewer than nine million people in the UK were over the age of 65. There were ten million in 2005. And it is estimated that there will be 13 million by 2030. (www.statistics.gov.uk)

The rise in number of those receiving centenary birthday greetings from the monarch describes a steady upward curve as well.
