Residents Meet in Bishopston ; in Brief [Edition 2]

BRISTOL: A meeting for residents of Bishopston, Cotham and Redland is being held tomorrow. The neighbourhood forum meeting takes place between 7pm and 9pm at the North Bristol Post 16 Centre, Charnwood House, 30 Cotham Park.

School's New Head Loves All the Drama ; Better Results Promised [Edition 2]

THE new head of Fairfield High School in Bristol has pledged to improve results and help all students reach their potential. Catriona Mangham, who started at the 950-student comprehensive in Allfoxton Road, Horfield, this month, said the school wanted 60 per cent of youngsters to get at least five good GCSEs including English and maths and 70 per cent to gain five or more good passes in any subject. This year's figures were 43 and 62 per cent.

'We're Going to Shrink Your Bins' ; Families of Up to Five Will Have to Manage with a Smaller Size 60 Litres Less? You'll Have to Recycle More [Edition 2]

RESIDENTS in Bristol are likely to be given smaller wheelie bins for their rubbish - and still only have them emptied once a fortnight. The city council says the move will help increase the amount of rubbish being recycled. Households in the city are currently given 240-litre bins, but a smaller 180-litre bin is soon expected to become the standard size for households with between three and five people. The 240-litre bin would be phased out and households with more than six people would be gi...

Murray Hopes Ended by Cillic ; in Brief [Edition 2]

TENNIS: British number one Andy Murray's US Open challenge ended at the hands of Marin Cillic last night, after an error-strewn display at Flushing Meadows. Second seed Murray had two set points for the first set but Cillic took it before extending his lead in a terrible second set, full of more errors, for Murray.

Open On-Line

Bus mounts pavement Tuesday, September 8: A reader's picture shows the lengths a Bristol bus driver went to in order to avoid sitting in a queue of traffic. The Wessex Connect 587 service from Kingswood to Hotwells was seen to not only mount the kerb, but drive with all of its wheels on the pavement for several dozen yards. We all know the bus shouldn't be on the pavement but if you frequently travel up and down that section of the Promenade (Litfield Place to the top of Bridge Valley road) y...

Soapbox: Anti-Social Neighbours

WITH reference to the problems faced by residents of Roselarge Gardens in Henbury, page three of Thursday's Post. The housing officers of the Bristol City Council are guided by the legal team of Bristol City Council as well as the anti-social behaviour team based in St Anne's House (to whom copies of this email are being transmitted) - as well as the Home Office in London.

Feedback: Our Islamic Voice

THIS is an American response to the article on September 1 titled : "A Muslim in Bristol: CIA techniques are Monstrous". While Americans are rightly aware that mistakes may have been made, we are also aware that this is not an issue as ethically "clear cut" as some have suggested. Firstly, while I, as an American, can admit that waterboarding crosses the boundary into torture, many other procedures that were used were far less harsh.

Keen to Locate the Other Winford Girls ; Open Lines

I WOULD be so pleased if you could publish the following letter. I was a student nurse at Winford Orthopaedic Hospital between 1962-64. These two years were among the very happiest of my life but, sadly, I did not keep in touch with anyone from those days.

Royal Navy Deserves Support and Respect ; Open Lines

I AM writing in reply to a letter from Richard Edwards. I did not read the original letter but Mr Edwards seems under the illusion that the Royal Navy is not doing its bit in Afghanistan. Maybe he has forgotten all the Marines that have been killed and badly injured; maybe he has forgotten that a lot of the air support has come from the navy, fighters, helicopters and that camp Bastion in Helmand was set up and run by the navy.

Me Is More Serious Than Excuse to Skive ; Open Lines

IT looks as though ME (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis) is the new "bad back" for skivers. It's often a winner for idlers to claim ME because there may be no obvious symptoms in those who really do suffer the real thing, or they may be fluctuating and difficult to predict, so workshy people are in with a good chance of getting signed off work. Sometimes you can prove a cheat, as insurance companies have, by covertly filming someone claiming a bad back or physical disability, and then carrying a bil...

Mixed Reaction to Bike Lift

A LIFT for cyclists (September 3) to help them to the top of Park Street. What piffle and drivel. I hope the so-called cycling campaigner and the City Cabinet councillor can rescue some personal credibility by convincing those around them that it had been taken out of context.

Schools Must Give Working Parents More Notice ; Open Lines

I HAVE just collected my child from the first day back at Perry Court Junior after the summer break of six and a half weeks. At the end of last term the last two days were "in service" days, and the beginning two of this term are the same.

In Praise Of...

BECAUSE firstly he put his wife before himself and left the starting line of this year's Bristol Half Marathon so he could be with her during labour. He was there right through until baby Leo James was born 15 hours later.

Time to Get Tough On Drunk Louts ; Comment

IT is sometimes hard to reconcile the descriptions of defendants in court with the crimes they have committed. In the case of Ricky Fugill of Filton, the judge described him thus: "You are a young man who has not been in trouble before. You owned up as quickly as you could. You are in work and I accept this is completely out of character."

Suspended Jail Term for Gay Festival Fraud

A FUNDRAISER who defrauded the organisers of a gay festival planned for Bristol has been handed a suspended jail term. Bristol Crown Court was told Daniel Corbin was taken on by Pride South West, a would-be charity attempting to stage the festival in Castle Park in August 2007.

Council Cash Desk Closures to Affect the Elderly

SOME of South Gloucestershire's most vulnerable residents will be hit hardest by the closure of cashier desks unless a decision to axe them is reversed, councillors in Kingswood have claimed. The offices are run to allow people to pay bills from council tax to parking fines but are due to be closed in January.

Motorway Delays Are Set to Continue

THE latest round of major roadworks on Bristol's motorway system affects the M5 at Avonmouth Bridge. Resurfacing and waterproofing work started on the northbound carriageway a week ago and is scheduled to go on almost until Christmas.

All the Nines Prove Special for Emma ; Birthday Girl Celebrates Unusual Date of 09/09/09

IT may read like an emergency number but it is, in fact, a celebration as a Westerleigh youngster celebrates her ninth birthday today. Emma Vandeleur was born at 9pm on the 9th day of the 9th month, nine years ago. Today - when the date reads 09/09/09 - she will be celebrating before having a sleepover at the weekend.
